The Grand Ole Opry
From TeeVeePedia, the Internet TV Encyclopedia.
The Grand Ole Opry was an early attempt by CBS to turn television into a medium for expanding the cultural awareness of Americans. Originally broadcast on CBS radio during the Great Depression and later brought to television during the 1950's, The Grand Ole Opry was inexplicably broadcast from a studio located in South America. The Grand Ole Opry mainly aired grand opera music penned by Richard Wagner and Hank Williams. America, however, decided it didn't want to be culturally enlightened, thus The Grand Ole Opry was cancelled in 1956.
