Summer Replacement Shows, also known as Summer Shows or Failed Pilot Episodes, are television programs that are aired during the summer when most of Hollywood is busy taking a well-earned summer vacation. Since most of the potential viewing audience is off on vacation as well, the ratings for these shows often rival those of the XFL and Arena Football.

On occasion, a summer replacement show becomes a huge hit, gets picked up for the fall season and enjoys a long and fruitful run. The odds of this happening are about as good as those of the show's producer winning the lottery.
