Memorial Day is a national holiday invented by television networks to celebrate the end of Sweeps month in spring. First celebrated after World War II by NBC's radio and television networks, Memorial Day became best known as the unofficial end of the TV season and the time when summer replacement shows and failed pilot episodes started airing.
