Captain Planet was a show created by Hanna-Barbera in the early 1990s in order to combat the burgeoning environmental movement. The strategy was ingenious: create a show so self-righteous and annoying that anyone who watched would instantly hate the environment and would want to destroy it as quickly as possible. The plan worked: sales of SUVs skyrocketed during the 4 years the show was on, trees in Brazil were clear-cut faster than ever, and proponents of the controversial global warming theory were increasingly ignored. The character Ma-Ti alone has been judged to be singlehandedly responsible for wiping out over 200 species of birds.
